*News Release - September 22, 2008*
Crystalworks’ New Vancouver Gallery First in the World to Showcase Museum Size Crystals and Minerals Vancouver, BC (22/9/2008) Crystalworks’ new Vancouver Gallery is the first in the world to exhibit crystals, minerals and fossils of museum size and quality in a space specifically designed to showcase their unique sculptural beauty. Large scale pieces are on display for designers, artists, decorators, collectors and individuals wishing to view, experience and purchase these rare objects of art from the mineral world. Crystalworks also offers ”desk gem” size and personal size pieces, many of which are incorporated into exquisite jewelry and other treasures, as well as a collection of specially commissioned crystal carvings and mixed media. The Gallery is located at Crystalworks’ new Kitsilano location, 1760 W. 3rd Ave (just east of Burrard), and is now open to the public. The opening reception for invited guests and media is Thursday, October 2. Media only please RSVP to Tina Baird at the contact below. Karen Lipsett-Kidd, part of the daughter/mother team who founded Crystalworks, states, “There is no other gallery in the world that showcases these pieces as the natural works of art that they are. Each one of these specimens is the result of a creative, transformative process that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago, culminating in the colors, facets and unique sculptural forms that are featured in the gallery. Opening a gallery of this quality and scope has been a dream for my mother and me ever since we started our business nearly a quarter of a century ago.” Susan Lipsett, Co-founder of Crystalworks adds, “Each crystal, fossil, and mineral specimen has its own unique story. These pieces have existed in the earth for hundreds of millions of years. It is an honor to be in their presence, if for only a moment in their span of time.” The pursuit of fine crystals and mineral specimens has been a life-long adventure for Susan and daughter Karen that started when Karen was a young girl. This passion for collecting mineral treasures led to founding the first Crystalworks store nearly twenty-five years ago in Vancouver. Since then, Crystalworks has grown to involve the whole family and an international clientele of collectors, designers and appreciators of fine specimens. Susan continues, “Because we personally choose all the pieces for the gallery, large and small, one or both of us is often on an expedition somewhere in the world. The people we have met and the experiences we have had are as varied, unique and wonderful as the crystals themselves.” Speaking about the Gallery itself Karen states, “We are a green gallery in both construction and function because what we present here are the works of nature, and it is important that we not only appreciate their beauty, but also their source. In keeping with this philosophy the pieces we choose and commission for the Gallery are acquired with respect for both the environment and fair trade. The entire gallery, its furnishings and displays are built on green principles and use renewable/recyclable materials. We also have a high efficiency LED lighting system that is being used in a gallery setting for the first time.” Karen continues, “We designed the gallery to be filled with natural light, generous space and a contemplative environment for the larger items. There are also many drawers to look through, as well as display cabinets for the mid and personal sized specimens.” Summarizing the impact of the Gallery, Susan says, “Crystals and colored minerals have fascinated human beings since antiquity for good reason. They are miraculous works of art formed by nature over hundreds of millions of years. People are always transfixed by the creative energy and exquisite stillness of the pieces, both large and small. It is no wonder that stories and legends have grown up around crystals throughout history. We have our own share of crystal stories - but in the end it is the pieces that speak for themselves.” |
